Inspire Your Children to Write for a Better World from Home
Schools throughout Wales, the United Kingdom and other Commonwealth nations remain closed to most pupils in an attempt to stop the spread of Covid-19. When the decision was taken in the UK to close all schools by 20th March, many parents and guardians became homeschoolers overnight. Most had no teaching experience but were suddenly left in charge of their children’s education.
In uncertain times, RCS Wales are pleased to announce one constant: The Queen’s Commonwealth Essay Competition. If you’re looking for a way to incorporate English, Creative Writing, Citizenship or Geography into your children’s home education, this competition is for you.
Running since 1883, it provides a great opportunity for young writers to share their thoughts and ideas on key global issues. Children aged 5-18 can get their voices heard while developing key skills that will benefit them in the future. The theme for 2020 is ‘Climate Action and the Commonwealth’, encouraging an exploration of how climate change might affect our children’s lives. In the aftermath of Youth Strike 4 Climate events around the UK, climate change has never been more relevant to young people.

If you need further incentive, past winners have gone on to be leaders in their fields, including the Prime Minister of Singapore, Mr Lee Hsien Loong, and the Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Mei Fong. Plus, the Queen’s Commonwealth Essay Competition offers great prizes. One Winner and Runner-up from the Senior and Junior categories will win a week-long trip to London – we’d love to see a Welsh winner this year!
