Looking Forward to RCS Wales’ 2020 Youth Summit!
RCS Wales hold Youth Summit events on a biennial basis, coinciding with the years in which the Commonwealth Heads of Government meetings (CHOGM) occur. This year’s CHOGM was scheduled to take place in Rwanda in June, but it has recently been postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The last CHOGM was hosted by the UK Government, taking place in London in April 2018. At these meetings, the leaders of all 54 Commonwealth nations come together to discuss pressing international issues, such as youth, the environment and trade.
Participants in RCS Wales Youth Summits are invited to share their views on the same pressing issues discussed in the year’s CHOGM. Therefore, the event gives the younger generation a chance to get their voices heard. RCS Wales believe that this is important, as youth are the leaders of tomorrow.
In 2018, RCS Wales worked in partnership with Eden Project Communities, the Royal Navy, the Royal Air Force and the Army to host the event at Coleg Gwent’s Crosskeys Campus. Participants came away with stronger communication skills and an enhanced ability to work as a team. They also developed an understanding of each of the Commonwealth member states and learnt more about democracy at the local community, national and international level. We hope that participants in the 2020 Youth Summit will find the experience similarly beneficial.
Young people are vital to the development of the Commonwealth as they are the future leaders of our world. RCS Wales are keen to promote the Commonwealth’s core values, as we recognise their importance in our divided world.
